Re: Adopting Saddle Lake Trail?

Hi Ken, I was just thinking it would be cool to fix saddle lake trail too. Like fixing the damn up there and blocking off the bypass with logs cemented in the ground. Could we do that or am I  just looking for trouble.

We have fixed the bypass more than ten times and all the quads and stock jeeps just move all the logs so they can make it up the trail.

So how would we go about getting permission to work on that trail?  I love that trail but I think it will get closed down with everyone running in the wet lands to make it to the top.

I just don't understand why people go around when they can't make it in their rig. That is why we have winchs . I am willing to put up money for cement to fix the trail and do the work I just don't want to get a ticket for it. Chris

Chris,

I see your message,  I have a lot of history I'd like to share with regard to your request.  It is a great request and offer, too.

I'll ponder the best way to share that history,  and think about the best way to "attack" the issue.

I'll get back to you.

Ken.

Chris (or anyone ! )

Is there any chance you have pictures of the rock pile, and the illegal work-around(s) at that point?

It's been a few years since I've been there, largely because most of my trips up there are alone,  and that rock pile has never been a favorite place to break something, being alone.

In the "old" days...  for the first 25 years that I was going up there, the trail went from that rooted mud hole (that is still there) but turned slightly to the right and cut through the willows, and across the meadow.  Neither of those actions are and can't be satisfactory to the Forest Service.  Half of the year that part of the trail was mud, deep mud,  and then by dry time deep 2-3 foot ruts.  It *needed* re-routing, and the Paradise 4 Wheelers got permission to "take it further" up the hill.  That they did, as in those days the club was nearly 25-30  FJ-40s, and they wanted to build a "gatekeeper" to Saddle Lake.

Since that time almost no one has been happy with how the rock pile has degraded with weather and use / abuse. Especially from those that created an illegal work around.

The old trail used to go along the right side of Saddle Lake as well,  then cut directly up a dirt bank to Mud Lake, eroding the hillside and caused the Mud  Lake Trail both from Saddle Lake and down from the Chips Lake trail to be closed.  (Fishing there sucked, anyway - and if it didn't, it's a 1/3 mile hike to get there anyway)

IMHO, *something* needs to be done to repair the situation before Saddle Lake.   Pictures would sure help "sell" the idea to the Land Managers.  I'd be happy to try, and be proactive to get 'er done,  rather than reactive after they shut it down.

Hi Ken I will look for pics of the bypass. If I can't find any I will take pics in a couple of weeks when I can get up there.

I may have some pics i will try and put up. I agree that trail is surely on the "to be closed" list. I have only been going up there for a few years and have seen the trail erosion and wear. I have tried several times to get up that friggin waterfall, with no luck as of yet. I haven't winched because I figure if I can't drive up it I don't belong in there. Still have never set eyes on saddle lake :'(

I believe the trail used to be narrow right at the waterfall? With only one lane up and down, its very wide now and many people are going down and around the rock face.

Thanks!

Chris ...  (and anyone else that is interested)   ....

This just in from Lassen National Forest Recreation Officer (and I've summarized HEAVILY to include only this issue,  -  and there are others).  Further I have calls into them to clarify, and to try to get them into some passenger seats for an on-ground pow-wow,  and details as to what we have to do.  As yet no reply.  I'll follow when concrete answers are known (pun intended).

The Supervisors office has issued emergency closure, based I believe, on recommendations of mitigating
unacceptable amounts of resource damage on the following
(delete text)  trails=Saddle Lake, (delete text)

That doesn't surprise me. ::)  A few of us winched trees and completly blocked off those side routes in early November one year and they were torn down and back to being used early the next spring.. >:(

Keep us updated, once my truck is registered I would be willing to give a ride up there.

You guys are refering to this spot then I am guessing? If so, how much further does this trail go right now. THis was as far as i went last weekend. There were quite a bit of tracks down through the trees going around it when we were there.

Yep, Josh,  that is the spot alright.   The trail goes only to Saddle Lake ...  I'm guessing, maybe 1/4 mile at the most,  maybe not even that.    It's been a long time since I have gone there, as I'm most often alone and that isn't a good place to break something, alone.   It's also the place where I'd asked you to try and prevent any in your group from doing a drive-around, and it sounds as if that is what you did.
