Luckiest Man Alive?
« on: July 19, 2009, 06:27:36 pm »
Looooong story short. I left the Saddle project at about 4pm Sunday. At hurricane point I was stopped by a frantic dirt bike rider saying a rider went down at 611 and 614 junction. He said he had a broken collar bone for sure and unknown other injuries. I told him to ride to Grassy with a sprint phone and try there.

I just bought a ham but it doesn't have any channels programmed yet. phone and cb was worthless. I hauled ass to Inn Skip and called from there.

I was on the phone for 20-30 minutes trying to explain to 3 different dispatches where HL OHV is located.
I finally gave them Longs and Lats and they dispatched a Redding helicopter.

The amazing part of this story......Enloe flight care was returning from Reno, did not know about this incident but was apparently flying so low that the motorcycle guys were able to flag them down and get the injured dude on the copter and out.

No word on the riders condition.

Lesson learned for me.......HAM would have been pretty handy to have....

Twice in the past I've had to call for help for others ,I get the same thing, the dispatchers don't have a clue ,the last one was out at Benlomand a quad rider with badly broken leg(don't put your foot out when you tip over ) I was able to convince them to get a map and they found it the Helicopter got there in under a half hour

Yes, get your ham license, and carry a GPS !

These are not the first accidents, and won't be the last.

And maybe as important, practice with those electronic things.
