Mobile Ham rig closeout
« on: January 10, 2010, 05:29:59 am »
Yaesu has closed out the FT-2800  a 2 meter only, 65 watt mobile rig.

It is being replaced by the FT-2900 which only has 10 more watts ( which at that level is minuscule ) , and a reverse of the Power / Wires buttons on the face.

I have the FT-2800 in my Heep, and it is so much better than a hand held 5 watt for getting out.  I also have one on my desk.

If anyone is interested in a ham rig for in their vehicle,  and since the dual band of the FT-60R is near useless up here,   I opted for the single 2 meter band rig, and have not used 70 cm anyway.  It is near useless because Beale AFB shut down any power on 70 cm repeaters.

I should add, though, that Rubicon uses 70 cm for a lot of things,  just not of much value in The High lakes area.

Here's the post announcing the close out:

> I just created a blog post this evening saying that Ham Radio Outlet is closing out the FT-2800M for $109. Not a bad deal.

Come and try either of my FT-2800s, if you want to see and feel how well it works.

Thanks for the heads up. I'm testing in Feb. and this is a great deal on an entry-level mobile rig.

JJ,  Good luck on your testing.  If you need or want any help in study, let one of us know.

This FT-2800M is actually not an entry level radio.  It is all the radio one who rides largely in The High Lakes would want or need in a vehicle mounted 2 meter rig.  If on the other hand if you spend most of your time on the Rubicon,  this may not be the best choice for your only radio.

It is built especially rugged to withstand the bouncing we give it, And at 65 watts vs the 5 watts of the hand-held HTs   a darn good radio.    Pair that with a great antenna and great coax, it is terrific.

Unbeatable at this closeout price.

Give Mark Howell at HRO, Oakland store   (800) 854-6046   I'm understanding that HRO system-wide has a good supply, but at this price they won't last forever.  Tell him you are with Friends of The High Lakes.
