Friends of The High Lakes is involved with two green sticker (OHMVR - Off-Highway Motor Vehicle Recreation) grants.grants this cycle.
Starting today, March 2, and up till close of business April 5 the public can make comments about all of the grant applications, either positively or negatively. Instructions as to how are contained in the grant information, which I've pasted below.
This cycle will have fierce competition, with only $ 13M available for on-the-ground operations, the area we are involved in. There is a total of $ 27M that includes preservation-closing, law enforcement,
If The High Lakes are even remotely important to you P L E A S E take some time and follow the instructions, and make substantive comments, hopefully positive to our two. It is a bit cumbersome, but if you think the commenting is cumbersome, you should wear my shoes, and know I've spent a month getting the application done.
If you have any more time, go through some of the other grants by other agencies, and groups, and make comments, as to why they should or should not be funded.
The comments are a very important part of the application process, and carry a lot of weight. This is important because of the challenging competition for a limited amount of money.
Please help this process, as we can and will do wonderful things, if we get funded, and if not, we won't be able to do much more than back breaking shovel work. One alternative, I suppose is to ask our members to dig deeper into their wallets, in these tough economic times, or get nothing done.
Here is the breakdown of the monies available this cycle:
In 2010, $27.1 million will be available for distribution among four funding categories:
Education and Safety: $ 1,300,000
Law Enforcement: $ 5,200,000
Operations & Maintenance: $13,000,000
Restoration: $ 7,600,000
Both of our grants are in the Operations and Maintenance arena.
grant #1 The FOTHL grant is: G09-04-53-G01
The Friends of The High Lakes has actively developed its draft Off-Highway Vehicle (OHV) grant application that was submitted to the State of California on March 1, 2010. The public is invited to comment on any changes or improvements to the program, and to assist with the development of the grant application. The application will be available for public review from March 2, 2010 through April 5, 2010. Final applications are due to the State of California on May 3, 2010..
To review the grant application, go to

The grant application is being submitted to pay for a collaboration with the CSU, Chico Research Foundation to provide the services of the students of the Recreation Management and Construction Management programs so we may better coordinate many of the programs that have made FOTHL so successful. Our important resources management work needs to continue or we risk losing valuable OHV recreation lands to closure.
The grant request also provides for the 1/2-time hiring of an Executive Director. Given the years of lack of management of the area along with the scope of the current resuscitation work necessary to be able maintain and advance our programs in the High Lakes, this position requires more time and expertise than is available on a purely volunteer basis.
